Because they are cute…Their red shiny jackets look friendly

Adults know them as helpful…Children know them as harmless

Because they are lucky and featured in rhyme

Everyone loves ladybugs all of the time!

However, about ladybugs

They are actually beetles. They have a flight radius of three miles, quite a feat if you’re a quarter inch long. They have a three stage life cycle lasting about 5 weeks during which they will consume 5,000 aphids, many times their body weight.

What an appetite!

When threatened, they play dead. To a predator they smell bad, and in a rose garden they are small enough to overlook as they go about the business of eating their competition.

Wherever they go, they free the garden of pests, propagate quickly, and overwhelm the competition almost invisibly…
